Character: Kazuya Minegishi (Abel)
Canon: Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor, Post 8th Day

Background Information: Game wiki and Fandom Wiki which is pretty decent. The route Kazuya is from is The Kings Choice, without killing anyone.

Personality:

In most situations, Kazuya is someone who takes the world in stride, and is a fairly passive and quiet person all things considered. He's someone who would rather not take charge of social situations, as evident by the fact that the mostly lets his friends Yuzu and Atsuro do the talking for him, with only the occasional quip from him when he's singled out for a response. It's not that he's bad at social situations, or doesn't know how to navigate them, and in fact can be a perfect conversation partner when away from said friends. It just isn't his first preference for the most part.

While his calm and passive veneer is fairly standard in most situations, as is his pleasant and polite personality, Kazuya also can be quite sharp when it comes to noticing things about people or situations, which unfortunately means if left to his own devices in a conversation he can come off as rather blunt, stating things with ease that social etiquette would otherwise say not to do so. To the point that he calls out Haru's suicidal idealizations and tendencies mid-conversation with her. He's not being rude for the sake of being rude, he just wants to make it aware that he knows what the situation is, and that hiding it won't do anyone any good.

When it comes to the lock-down, and everything in it, all Kazuya wants is for himself and his friends to go back to their normal lives. He doesn't care about God, he doesn't care about demons, he doesn't care what his cousin Naoya is planning or even what the government is up to. He wants his normal regular life back, and that is his motivation through out the entire ordeal. In keeping Yuzu and Atsuro safe, Kazuya can focus his attention on them rather than on the war for the throne of Bel, in keeping Midori and Keisuke safe, he can focus his attention on them instead of how the world he knew is falling apart around him. It's not a healthy coping mechanism, but it's one he uses to great effect: Focus on protecting and helping other people survive in the hope that whatever happens next lets him survive too.

Which is probably why he delays in choosing whose viewpoint to follow until the very end. To escape the lock-down with Yuzu despite how badly that would end for everyone else, to help Atsuro tame the demons, to send the demons back with the power of Haru's song. To become a Messiah and a puppet of the Angels, or to follow his cousin and become the King of Bel and fight God for the freedom of humankind. He wants all of the information he can get, he wants to make the best choice possible when it comes to the safety of his friends and their needs.

Kazuya chooses to become the King of Bel. Not for Naoya's reasons, not entirely. He wants the situation that caused the lock-down to never happen again, and he's under the understanding that will only happen if he can kill God and free humanity from his Tyranny. It all comes back to survival, if God and the angels are dead, humankind will never have to fear another lock-down and the horrors it entailed. To him, it's becoming a protector of humanity, even if he has to give up his own to do so.

He's not unaware of that fact. He's not unaware that most humans either revere him or revile him, see him as either a benevolent dictator at best, or a new tyrant taking Gods place at the end of the day. A realization came when Yuzu left him and Atsuro the night before he became the Overlord of demon-kind. It's not something he blames her for though. After all, even he had no clue how much he'd change after absorbing Babel. It was a gamble, and he can recognize the fact that while it hurt, Yuzu in all likelihood didn't want to see her best friend turn into a monstrous tyrant like the other Bel's were.

After all, when Babel told him to relinquish his humanity, it was under the assumption that all of it would be lost, and yet Kazuya makes it a point to cling and hold onto what little he has left like lifeline in a stormy sea. He makes the choice to continue to help the people who hunt him down and try to kill him just because of what he is now, even when it's made clear to him that it would just be easier to kill them and make an example out of them. He doesn't want to, the last thing he wants is to hurt the people he gave up his humanity to protect, even if it's hard to remember why sometimes.

It's pretty easy to say that after everything he's been through that Kazuya is pretty traumatized; even if he does his best to not think about the horrors he's witnessed in the lock-down. Even if he tries not to think about the factors of Bel inside him that call for violence and bloodshed and reverence all the same. If he ignores it, it's not a problem. If he does his best to play up being a normal teenager, he can stuff it back down and properly compartmentalize his trauma all while making sure that people think he's harmless and not, you know, a terrifying being with power that rivals God.

Abilities & Inventory:

  • Elemental Resistance In Devil Survivor, the elements are Fire, Ice, Electricity, Wind, Curse, and Almighty. Kazuya will not take any damage from the fire element, and take a little less damage from all others minus Almighty (Holy), where he'd take full damage.

  • Dimension Hopping / Teleporting As the king of Bel, Kazuya is able to open portals to just about wherever he wants to go on earth or the demon realm. For Songerein, I'd like to keep this to places he's already been, and where other characters homes/personal areas are concerned, he'll need permission. You know. Like a vampire.

  • Regeneration / Physical Endurance / Mental Endurance Kazuya is able to regenerate from any sort of fatal wound, though it does take some time. He's also a lot more hardy and hard to injure than a normal human would be thanks to his new Bel physiology. He's also resistant, but not immune, to mental attacks as long as he knows they're coming.

  • Demon Summoning As the king of Bel and thus King of Demons, Kazuya has absolute sovereignty over demons that aren't bound by contracts, and can summon them to his side regardless of what barriers between the demon realm and the world have been placed. For Songerein, he'll only be able to have one demon at a time summoned this way, and will be unable to summon them if he's using the two that are coming with him in his COMP, Cerberus and Culebre.

  • Increased Strength/Speed Absorbing the powers of the other Bels in game has the effect of increasing his speed and range of movement, meaning it probably is fair to say that he's able to move faster than a normal person.

  • Magical Ability Even before becoming the King of Bel, the power of the modified COMP let him use magic. At the beginning of his entrance into the game, he'll only have access to the following magic skills: Agidyne, Ziodyne & Drain. The abilities of the other Bel's he'll have access to will only be Beldrs' Vampiric Mist and Belial's Lost Flame. Obviously nowhere near as strong as their in game counterparts.

Suitability & Plans: I'd like to play Kazuya in Songerein for a number of reasons: We barely get to see him as he interacts with other people when he isn't having to constantly fight against his and his friends death clock. I'd also like to explore the rift between him formerly having been human, and now having to deal with being the king of demons who had to discard his humanity for the sake of his friends, the power of Bel, and of course, the hatred of God that all Bel's share that now resides within him, and the fact that he never actually wanted to be the king of Bel, but was forced into it.

While I don't believe he'd need castmates to be played, the fact that Naoya is already here presents an interesting situation: All Kazuya wants is to be a normal person, and while he might be able to fool other people for a bit, there's the very real possibility that Naoya could ruin that and reveal who and what he is, which would also make for interesting CR development.

Also, like, most canon characters are weirdos in their own right. Maybe it won't be so bad for him to also be one!
